OK, so you're a Republican. But you're not one of those Republicans who's happy with the path the Bush administration has led us down. Why not take this opportunity to show the party that it's time for it to modernize its policies? Even the most rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth conservatives - Pat Buchanan - for example, Newt Gingrich - criticize Bush as a tax-and-spend Republican who has failed to adhere to fiscally conservative policies. (Who's going to pay for this war? Who's going to pay for the bailout of AIG and the Fannies? Who's going to pay for the fund to support the morons who trusted mortgages to people with unsound credit? Who the hell has been minding the fort?)
And let's not forget the past few decades of fundamentalist policies. You don't believe that shit. Let your party know that. If you don't slap its hands now, what incentive does its leaders have to change? (Look at Sarah Palin, a religious kook if I ever saw one. Even with Bush's popularity in the toilet, the Republican leadership has refused to change course. They aren't going to change until you tell them to.)
The only check remaining on fundamentalist extremism has been the Supreme Court. There are three liberals left, all of whom have one foot in the grave (liberals who, incidentally, support gay rights, reproductive rights - and I'm not talking abortion necessarily: How about contraceptives, the kind little Bristol could have used). There's another justice who can be reasonable. Four others are homophobic assholes who literally care more about gun rights than human rights. Finally, there's Kennedy, the swing vote, who at least doesn't appear to have any terrible ax to grind and who has--despite being appointed by Ronald Reagan--not been a complete foe of gay people's right to be left the hell alone (how conservative is that, by the way - government out of people's lives?). Kennedy is young. He was born in 1936.
If a Republican wins the presidency this time around, it will have consequences on the Supreme Court that will plague the rest of our natural born lives. Don't take my word for it. Read about it. Think about it.
This author is not "a Democrat." She agrees that there are areas where reasonable people might disagree (as long as it's not with her). But she urges you not to vote for a party that pries its buttocks apart at the behest of hypocritical "Christians" who, if there truly is a god, will be shocked to discover one day that the Being with whom they will reside for eternity has one hell of a tail and is really, really RED.
